Max Baucus weighs in on proposed US tariffs

Posted: Updated:

MISSOULA - President Trump's chief economic adviser, Gary Cohn, has resigned. The move Tuesday came amid the president’s plan to move forward with tariffs on aluminum and steel -- something Cohn opposed.

MTN News spoke with former Montana senator and ambassador to China Max Baucus about the proposed tariffs on Monday.

" I don't think they are a good idea. I think if President Trump goes through with them, this could cause something close to a trade war and if it approaches a war, then everybody gets hurt,” Baucus said.

He said the bigger problem is the overcapacity of steel, particularly in China.

The former ambassador said the solution would be to get countries working together to reduce steel production, because the overcapacity is depressing prices, and hurting American steel production.
