A celebration of women's achievement, support for WORD

Posted: Updated:

MISSOULA - Thursday marked International Women's Day with women and men across the world are marching and holding protests to honor women's rights.

A group of female-fronted bands raised their voices in Missoula to support of a local organization that has been supporting women in the community for decades.

There were dozens of people on hand to support Women’s Opportunity and Resource Development (WORD) thanks to Arrowleaf, a Missoula-based band, that headed up the effort and brought this celebration of women to Missoula.

“They are doing really important work, and I wanted to help raise money for an organization that I knew, they were losing funding, and really needed the help, and I saw this as a way I could help,” said Sarah Marker, the band’s lead singer who also organized this event.

WORD is currently conducting a survey to determine what women in the area need. Transportation, housing, and supporting families are all issues the organization is working on now, but moving forward, they also want to advance women economically, said Suzin Kratina, executive director of WORD.

“Making sure that women can find the kind of work that they want to do, create their own opportunities, can create their own businesses and become entrepreneurs in whatever areas they want to move into, and WORD will be there to support that,” Kratina said.

The events at Freecycles in Missoula was just one of many worldwide on Thursday as women and men called for lasting change in areas of equality and human rights.
