SUPERIOR - This week’s One Class at a Time winner is using the money to buy non-fiction books for his students.
Superior Elementary second grade teacher Derrick Criner says he has a wide selection of fiction books, but has found that his limited non-fiction selection has really piqued his student’s interest. He says his class finds factual books engaging and relatable to real-life situations.
Thanks to Republic Services and KPAX-TV, Criner is this week’s winner of a $250 check, which will allow him to add several books to his non-fiction collection.
“The offer them the ability to use text features like diagrams and pictures and maps and all those things that they’ll see in real-life situations," Criner says. "And so if I can get students to recognize those early it will help them to be more successful later on.”
