Residents in flood areas prepare for rising waters later this week

Posted: Updated:

MISSOULA - Flood levels have been teetering around the minor to moderate flood level mark for the past two days, which means that some residents have been able to return to their homes to grab necessities or to prepare for the next round of major flooding that is expected to begin on Thursday.

Some residents have begun that preparation and have had some questions for officials.

One question from a resident involved water for showering or laundry. The Salvation Army is offering their showers and laundry facilities to those in need and you do not need to be staying at the building in order to use those services. The Missoula Family YMCA is also offering free services for families and individuals who have been evacuated from their homes due to flooding.

The American Red Cross of Montana, located at Christ the King Church at 1400 Gerald Avenue, is also providing a place to sleep, food, water and showers. They will be open as long as the flooding continues.

Another common question involves septic and water quality. Those questions can be answered by calling call health services at 406-258-4755.

One resident was looking towards the future and had a question of what to do with sandbags when flooding season ends.

“I got a phone call from the landlady wanting to know what our intentions were with the sandbags," Marc Gonzalez said. "Because after it's all done said and done, she wants us to dispose of them and not on the property. So I came here to find out what to do with all the sandbags and where was a disposal place or a return place.”

As of now the county does not have a plan in place for sandbag disposal but officials say that will be apart of the recovery process, which is still in the planning stages.
