Women, girls take part in Missoula car care clinic

Posted: Updated:

MISSOULA - Knowing the ins and outs of your car is a fantastic way to save money and ensure safety.

The YWCA of Missoula organized a car clinic over the weekend to help women and girls become more comfortable with their vehicles.

Roemer's Point S Tire and Auto Service closed down to the public for part of Saturday morning so that participants could learn the basics on fluid management, the layout of the engine and the nuances of taking care of your vehicle.

The event was a part of the Girl Representing In Trades Program (GRIT), which usually aims to encourage high school girls to take interest in trades, like welding or carpentry.

The auto clinic welcomed women of all ages to bring in their cars and learn the proper way to jump a dead battery or why you shouldn’t take off the radiator cap until the engine is cold to the touch.

Margaret Hoyt with GRIT was thankful for the opportunity and to work with local business.

"So Roemer's closed down for the morning and they are going to be taking us into different garages and we’re gonna be able to work on our own cars. And so, all of Roemer's staff is working for us... and helping us and teaching us about our cars!" Hoyt explained.

This was the first time in 20 years that the Missoula YWCA has worked with Roemer's to do this program.
