Former Big Sky HS student's case gets sent to youth court

Posted: Updated:

MISSOULA - An 18-year-old former Big Sky High School student will appear in a juvenile court on felony charges stemming from an incident that involved the then 17-year-old trying to flee from the school and being shot at by the school's SRO in the process.

One of the felony charges was for possession of a dangerous drug which allowed the court to try the juvenile as an adult.

The former Big Sky student’s defense called for a transfer hearing to have the case sent back to youth court.

It took two days of deliberation in that transfer hearing which involved testimony from the student's parole officer and his mother.

The defense team argued that having the juvenile tried as an adult would prevent him from being able to go to college or obtain a good job.

Prosecutors argued that it is in the community's best interest to have him tried as adult.

Judge Karen Townsend took the decision into advisement and signed off on her decision on June 8. Townsend granted the transfer back to youth court and the juvenile is scheduled to appear June 12.
