Missoula fly-in scheduled for this weekend

Posted: Updated:

MISSOULA - Missoula is getting a special treat later this week as the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association will be holding it’s first regional Fly-In for the 2018 season, an event never held before in Missoula.

“We do about four of these per-year in different places around the country," according to AOPA Senior Director of Outreach Events Chris Eads. "We’ve had over 100 airports apply to host an event. We selected Missoula because the location is phenomenal, but the airport leadership here, the leadership of the on-field aircraft businesses have been phenomenal. And so it’s really given us a great opportunity to connect with a good community and a great aviation location.”

Several hundred aircraft and pilots will fly in from all over the country to take part in the event, which kicks off at noon on Friday and continues through 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

Missoula Fly-In is free for all ages and features a variety of activities and learning experiences.

“We’re going to have seminars and exhibits, and workshops and various things for pilots to do to deepen their skills," Eads said. "For our non-aviators, we have on Saturday at 10 o’clock a presentation called “You can be a pilot,” and it’s experiencing what the pilot lifestyle is like for non-aviators, to realize flying is a lot of fun. It’s a lot easier than most people realize.”

A Roundup Flight Demonstration will show how quickly aircraft can start and stop on very small airstrips.

Eads says an event like this is also good for the community.

“We’re going to be bringing four to five-thousand people in from all over the U.S. to experience Missoula and all Missoula has to offer.”

Attendees can also take in three different fly-outs over the two-day event including one to the Bob Marshall Wilderness Area, Seeley Lake and Libby.
