Help needed to fend off brutal mosquito season in Missoula

Posted: Updated:

MISSOULA - The Missoula County Extension and Weed District is anticipating a major year for mosquitoes, which could be a problem for anyone who enjoys the outdoors.

The severity of this year's flood season has allowed mosquito larvae to hatch earlier than in past years. If weather allows it, the early hatch could make for a longer mosquito season.

Only one area in Missoula County is organized to defend themselves collectively against mosquitoes, and that’s in Lolo.

If you live in Missoula County, officials say that they need your help to to eliminate areas that allow mosquitoes to lay their eggs and hatch.

“There's a role for homeowners to play that they can help with the problem. Mosquitoes, like I said, like still water so if you've got a bird bath you should be changing that at least on a weekly basis," said Jerry Marks, Head of the Missoula County Extension and Weed District. "Or if you've got cans or old tires, places where water can accumulate, solving those does go a long ways to help with the mosquito problem."

Officials also say that because of the increase in mosquito activity you should be prepared to wear mosquito repellent when outdoors.
