MISSOULA – A new phone scam is making the rounds in Western Montana.

Law enforcement has received information that someone was calling residents and pretending to be a Deputy Petersen from the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office notes that while they do have a Deputy Petersen on staff, he’s not calling and asking folks for money or gift cards.

It has been reported that the scammer sounds like he is from the south and knew the potential victim’s full name, according to a news release.

MCSO points out they will never call to ask for money or gifts cards.  Anyone who receives a call is being told not to give out personal information or money.

“This particular scammer, who has tried this scam before, goes through the effort to find out our actual deputies name. Don’t fall for it,” the Sherrif’s Office noted in a social media post.
