MISSOULA – Police responded around seven on Saturday morning to reports of a fire on the 6000 block of US Highway 93 South.

Investigators have determined the blaze was a case of arson and now have a suspect in custody.

About an hour after the reports came about the fire, police arrested Thomas Edward Smith and charged him with felony arson.

The 62-year-old Michigan man was also charged with felony arson on Feb.1 for setting a cabin on fire near Buckhouse Bridge.

At the time, Smith was also tied to several vandalism cases that had occurred in and around downtown Missoula.

Court documents from his arrest in February say Smith was clearly suffering from mental illness when police apprehended him.

No one was injured in either of the fires and police are continuing to investigate.
