KALISPELL – Kalispell Police have identified the man suspected of shooting another man last week.

Matthew David Smith, from Whitefish, is accused of attempted deliberate homicide.

Chief Doug Overman says officers responded to a home on the southwest side of Kalispell around 6 p.m. on Friday.

There they found a 33-year-old man with a gunshot wound. He was taken to Kalispell Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, where he remains in critical condition.

Chief Overman says while the incident happened on 4th of July weekend, he does not believe it is tied to the holiday.

“Generally, in the city limits of Kalispell sometimes some of the revelry goes out into the forest and into the county areas.  You know, any day can be anything,” Chief Overman said. “I don’t know that this was associated with any holiday festivities.”

He added that the investigation into the incident is still on-going.
