MISSOULA — Every year the KPAX Sports Awards Banquet celebrates Missoula's stand-out high school athletes.

Each year 10 athletes are nominated by the five area schools, two athletes per school.

On the night of the banquet a male and female winner are chosen, with a $1000 scholarship prize going to each.

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, KPAX will unfortunately not be able to hold the banquet, but the awards will still happen.

On the night of May 13, KPAX will announce the winners on the 5:30 News.

Once again this year KPAX-TV is the lead sponsor for what was the Ray Rocene Sportsman of the Year Banquet from 1957 to 1994.

Regardless of sponsorship, which has included the Missoula Area Chamber of Commerce with help from area service clubs, the Missoula Mavericks, Smurfit Stone Container, and the Honors Court, the banquet recognizes the Missoula area's finest for their contributions to sport.

First named after long-time Missoulian sports editor Ray T. Rocene, it began as a luncheon honoring UM and area high school letter winners. The focus then went strictly to high school letter winners, followed by area adults receiving awards, and more recently by adult and Missoula high school recipients.
