The Montana Highway Patrol reports that a driver heading west went into the closed lane in the construction zone near the Bonner bridge and hit several barriers before over-correcting and going into the median. The vehicle then went airborne before hitting a vehicle heading east on I-90.

MHP reports a passenger in the eastbound vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene and four other people were taken to Missoula hospitals to be treated for injuries sustained in the crash.

The accident shut down the eastbound lanes of I-90 between Bonner to Turah for several hours and caused traffic to back up for miles.

Authorities say that drugs and alcohol are not suspected to have played a role in the accident but speed may have been a factor. The Montana Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash.

The name of the person killed in the accident has not yet been released.

(first report)

MISSOULA – Emergency crews are on the scene of a fatal vehicle crash on Interstate 90 approximately 10 miles east of Missoula.

The Missoula County Sheriff’s Office says that one westbound vehicle crossed the center line and sideswiped an eastbound RV. They say one person has died at the scene while 7 to 8 others have been taken to area hospitals.

The Montana Highway Patrol says the crash was reported at 2:27 p.m. at mile marker 111 in the eastbound lanes.

Eastbound traffic on I-90 was temporarily rerouted from Bonner to Turah, but traffic in the eastbound lanes has since re-opened. Delays may still occur in the area.

MHP will be investigating the crash while MCSO conducts the coroner’s investigation.
