BUTTE — One of the largest employers in Butte is considering a sale of its facility.
REC Silicon's Board of Directors is looking into selling its large plant due to the trade war with China.
The plant is located south of Butte, and it employs approximately 300 people. REC Silicon produces silane gas and other specialty gases.
Economic officials say REC Silicon is important to Butte, but it's too early to panic about the future of the plant.
“From the press release and the information we’ve gathered, it’s really much to early to make any decisions,” said Joe Willauer, the Butte Local Development Corporation executive director.
“This is certainly not a closure, this doesn’t even mean there’s a sale pending, it’s just something that they’re looking at as an option, and so, it really is much too early to make any substantial decisions about what this actually means.”
The Butte Local Development Corporation plans to hold meetings with REC management in the coming days to learn more about this announcement.
