World Central Kitchen has traveled the world assisting people in times of disaster. The organization has setup shop in Lafayette this evening as the city weathers Hurricane Delta.

World Central Kitchen’s Josh Phelps said earlier on Friday that the organization delivered meals to first responders. Phelps said that World Central Kitchen is prepared to serve 5,000 meals a day while in Louisiana.

“We were meeting with first responders – the police and fire departments, dropped hot meals, sandwiches and things like that,” Phelps said about his organization's day in the city. “We have a nice kitchen here set up, ready as soon as the storm passes tomorrow.”

Earlier in the week, crews from World Central Kitchen had their first brush with Hurricane Delta, assisting residents of the Yucatan Peninsula, which saw a direct hit from the hurricane on Wednesday. The organization said about half of the meals they served in Mexico were given to front-line workers.

The organization has also been serving meals to those affected by the California wildfires.
