LAUREL- New details emerged Tuesday in the case of a Laurel school resource officer who’s under investigation for sexual misconduct with a 16-year-old.

The incident took place in the summer of 2017 at a home outside the city of Laurel, according to a press release Tuesday from Laurel Chief Administrative Officer Matthew Lurker.

The school resource officer was suspended from his job, with pay, last Friday after the district heard of the allegations from MTN News.

Lurker is handling the case but is withholding the identity of the officer. He said the alleged sexual misconduct took place while the officer was off duty.

The victim was 16 years old at the time, according to the information released by Lurker.

The Laurel Police Department is conducting an internal investigation, while the Laurel School District officials say they are working to preserve student safety this time.

The school resources officer has not been charged with a crime.
