An argument over their favorite sports team and a mutual former girlfriend between two Billings men led to a stabbing on Christmas Day.

Kelly Lee Johnson, 30, was charged Thursday in Yellowstone County Justice Court with felony assault with a weapon.

He was being held at the Yellowstone County jail.

According to police and court records, officers responded to a report of an assault Wednesday at 8:13 p.m. at 307 South 28th Street.

Officers found a 30-year-old man with stab wounds outside the apartment lying on a sidewalk with several people attending to him.

A witness said he had been inside an apartment with Johnson and the victim and the three were watching sports on television and drinking alcohol.

The man said Johnson and the victim began to have a disagreement and to argue over their different favorite teams and then over a woman each had dated, court records state.

The witness said Johnson got up during the argument, went to the kitchen and came back with a knife, which he used to attack and stab the victim.

The victim and the witness were able to get out of the apartment and the witness said he helped the victim to the sidewalk where officers found them.

Officers followed the blood trail from the sidewalk to an apartment unit where Johnson was arrested.
