WHITEFISH – Flathead National Forest officials are trying to figure out why three trees were set on fire near the boundaries of Whitefish Mountain Resort on Tuesday.
The trees are on Big Mountain in the Flower Point area off of Ridge Run in the Elkweed area.
They estimate they were set ablaze between 2:20 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
Officials said in a Facebook post that it is NEVER a good idea to intentionally set a tree on fire in the forest regardless of the time of year, temperature or the weather, regardless of whether or not snow is on the ground. Doing so can lead to a $300 fine.
