SOMERS – Construction has begun on a $15.8 million addition to Somers Middle School.

Superintendent Joe Price tells MTN that this addition is made possible by a bond.

Crews finally broke ground at the beginning of May after some difficulty with Somers’ soil. Price explains the school sits on a unique ground made of sandy soil which makes it challenging for crews to find stability for the foundation. He says crews are placing special columns into the ground to provide the new addition with stability.

Price explains parts of Somers’ building were built in 1953, and with a growing student population, Price tells MTN this new addition is desperately needed.

“We have bathrooms in the old building that we haven’t been able to use for the last year and a half because the pipes that go out to the sewer are collapsing underneath the parking lot. We have electrical issues in most of this building,” Price explained.

Price says the addition will also provide more space for Lakeside Middle Schoolers who are running out of room. The new addition will have more classrooms, a larger lunch room and a new gym with hardwood floors.

Price tells MTN construction is on schedule and should be complete by fall of 2020.
