BIGFORK — The small community of Bigfork turns into Christmas wonderland each winter.

The Saturday before Thanksgiving more than 200 elves, or volunteer community members, help decorate Bigfork into a scene straight out of your favorite Christmas movie.

Known by many as Christmas Town Montana, Bigfork transforms each winter, drawing visitors from across the country. Bigfork Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Rebekah King says 10,000 feet of garland is used to decorate downtown.

“This year we ordered over 10,000 feet of garland which is made here locally in Bigfork, and the elves come together and decorate the whole town. It’s really an amazing, amazing day,” said King.

King says the Christmas festivities help showcase all the different recreation activities Bigfork has to offer during the winter months.

“You know, you shop downtown, you walk the wild mile, go cross country skiing, there’s so much to do in that holiday outdoor spirit,” said King.

Bigfork Inn Co-owner Francois Zanni says the extra visitors during the holiday season make a major impact for local business. “The holidays, Christmas time is a big boost for us in the middle of winter, makes a big difference to us.”

Festivities continue throughout the month with special events each weekend and the Christmas decorations will remain downtown until the last weekend in January.

The holiday spirit continues this weekend in with the annual Parade of Lights on Saturday, featuring a special guest appearance from Santa. The event gets underway at 6 p.m.
