WHITEFISH — City of Whitefish officials met with WGM Group representatives Monday to discuss design updates on the Baker Avenue underpass project during a city council work session.

The intent of the underpass is to provide a walking path under Baker Avenue close to the O’Shaughnessy Center.

WGM Group Principal Engineer Jon Gass expects the project to move quickly once the final design is chosen.

“The project goal is to be bidding in May with an award in July and construction after Labor day," said Gass.

City officials say the project has been in the planning process since 2005.

WGM engineers showcased different size and structure designs for the project including 20 feet and 24 feet vertical exteriors.

The project is expected to be fully funded by tax increment finance funds set aside by the city.

The overall cost of the project depends on structure size and additional updates.

Gass believes the project will take three months to complete once construction begins.

A final design expects to be approved by city officials in the next few months.
