WHITEFISH — Montana Department of Transportation and City of Whitefish officials met with the community on Thursday night to discuss improvements for US Highway 93 through downtown.

Transportation officials are in the early phase of a project aimed at improving traffic flow and overall safety and Whitefish Public Works Director Craig Workman said the meeting was crucial for gathering public feedback.

“We’re in the early stages of the plan and the goal tonight is really to get feedback from the public, what are the public's concerns, how can we improve the roadway, what are the priorities, really to get feedback, the business owners and the residents are the people that know Whitefish the best so we need to gather their input in order to come up with an effective project,” said Workman.

He said data obtained during the open house will help the city come up with highway improvement options during the early study process.

US Highway 93 is located in the center of Whitefish and serves as a primary travel route for vehicle traffic. Transportation officials say traffic volume has increased by 12% in downtown Whitefish over the past 10 years.
