The Missoula County Sheriff's Office is alerting residents to a scam the department has received multiple reports about of late.

The scammers are identifying themselves as law enforcement, specifically deputies from the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office, and stating that money is owed and that they must pay immediately or be arrested. They are then asked to provide information related to personal banking or other payment methods to pay the bill.

The Missoula County Sheriff’s Office, or any law enforcement agency, will not call and request banking or credit card information over the phone. If you receive a message stating that it is the sheriff’s office and you need to call and pay money owed, do not call the number listed.

MCSO is also reminding residents that government agencies and most other businesses will not call and request financial information over the phone. Before providing any personal or financial information, the individual should call the cited agency or organization and confirm the request.

If they believe they have been a victim of this scam, MCSO requests that they call (406) 728-0911 and report it.
