ARLEE — It's one of the biggest cultural events of the summer in western Montana, but this week, the Arlee Powwow committee decided to cancel the event due to COVID-19 concerns.

The weekend event was scheduled for July 1-5 and included traditional dancing, stick games and drumming and a rodeo that draws hundreds to the Arlee Powwow grounds.

But this week, the committee made the tough decision to cancel for this summer in order to keep its community safe and healthy.

It would have been the 122nd year of the Powwow.

Comments on the Salish/Kootenai tribal council Facebook page express disappointment but appreciation to the committee for keeping the health and safety of its citizens a priority.
