COVID-19 doesn’t stop annual Missoula Santa Socks event

MISSOULA — Santa Socks, an annual event put on by the United Veterans Council of Hope and other volunteers, is still happening this year -- but like most things with a twist.

Volunteers are not allowed in any of the nursing homes, assisted living facilities, independent- living spaces they usually visit this time of year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

But that won’t stop Santa’s helpers. They are still dropping off socks donated by Cabela's and filled with goodies donated by local businesses.

Usually, a group of volunteers would sing, dance, and spend time with veterans while making their deliveries. But this year the box full of socks will be left at the front desk for the staff to distribute.

Thanks to a grant from First Interstate Bank, they had all the funds they needed to buy treats to fill the socks to the brim.

And as always, students, this year from Washington Middle School and Russell Middle School, made cards.

The cards and the socks will be distributed to 22 different facilities. The delivery started Tuesday and continues through the weekend until they run out of socks.
