MISSOULA — One of Missoula's landmark trails on Mount Sentinel is getting a makeover.

University of Montana officials say the "M" trail -- which is one of the most popular hiking spots in Missoula -- needs some improvements.

Beginning on Friday volunteers will replace steps at the trailhead, add a retaining wall near the M, and renovate steps at the 11 switchbacks.

The project will take about two years to complete.

Project supervisor Marilyn Marler says the renovations are necessary to keep the iconic landmark in top shape.

"It's just the backdrop of our everyday life. It's beautiful, it's something that all tourists do, students do, most but not all locals have hiked the M at one point or another," Marler said. "But whether you go up there every day, or if you've never been there, it's just part of Missoula."

Starting on Monday, there will be signs directing a re-route of the trails while volunteers work on the updates.
