COVID-19 has changed all our lives, but it hasn’t stopped some young people in Glasgow from doing what they love the most- performing for others. Only now, it’s being done in a different way.
Normally, Glasgow High School’s Swing Choir would be practicing in person for its end-of-year performances, but this is no normal year for anyone.
“It’s a little bit of a struggle. It’s hard not to feel disappointed, but I’m just staying positive," said Nicole Lippert, a senior at Glasgow High and an alto in the swing choir.
One way the group is trying to do that is by performing on the video conferencing app Zoom. Director Luree Green-Chapell put it all together.
“The kids just recorded themselves following a conductor track that I made and sent them to me and I just edited them all together,” she said.
The result couldn’t be more beautiful.
“Swing choir is a big part of our lives and it’s just like an updated family. We really miss it. This video is as close as we’ll get to having the performances that are so important to all of us,” said senior Austin Babb, the lead tenor in the group.
It also provides a musical reprieve until all of us hopefully get back to normal.
“I miss these kids. I miss their sass and there positive attitudes,” said Green-Chapell.
The choir is hopeful they'll be able to perform again in person later this summer. In the meantime they'll be putting new music every week as long as they can on their Facebook page, GHS Swing Choir .
