Doctors are crediting an Idaho State Police sergeant with saving the life of a badly beaten 2-year-old boy.

Idaho State Police Sergeant Justin Klitch helped arrest a man for trafficking meth after discovering a child in his car with life-threatening injuries during a traffic stop Tuesday in Shoshone County.

The driver, Jorge Gonzalez-Vergel was in the car with a 32-year-old woman and two children, ages two and one.

Klitch noticed signs of physical trauma on the woman’s face and multiple injuries on the 2-year-old. He noticed the child wasn’t entirely responsive and called in medics.

Klitch said this was one of the worst cases of abuse he has ever seen.

The 2-year-old was taken to Sacred Heart Hospital’s ICU with life-threatening injuries, including brain injuries. The child had several visible marks and scars indicating severe child abuse.

Doctors have said that if it wasn’t for that traffic stop, the child might not have survived.
