For over a decade now, Get Fit Great Falls has invited locals to hit the snow-covered Silver Crest Winter Trials in Neihart on Winter Trails Day.

This annual event allows people of all ages and ability levels to take a snowshoe or cross country ski lesson completely free.

The trails range from 1 to 3 miles and include both family-friendly hikes and tougher treks.

Those wishing to ski on winter trails day can register and pick up their skis at Bighorn Outdoor Specialists on 206 5th St S in Great Falls.

After the lesson in winter sports, hikers are welcome to a free lunch.

Snowshoers can sign up for one of 16 hikes online at the get fit great falls website.

Get Fit Great Falls partner, Dave Cunningham, has been involved with this event since 2008 and says registration typically fills up quickly.

“We have capacity for 200 to 300 people on the hikes and some hikes will fill up very, very quickly,” Cunningham said.
