POLSON — A Lake County Sheriffs deputy is being treated for second and third degree burns in a Seattle area hospital after a broken down vehicle backfired.

The incident happened off of US Highway 93 North near Ronan at around 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

A Lake County Sheriffs deputy noticed a broken down vehicle on the side of the highway and stopped to assist the driver.

While doing so the carburetor on the vehicle backfired, shooting flames and gasoline onto the deputy's face and hands, severely burning him.

The deputy has maintained consciousness throughout the ordeal, and according to Lake County Sheriff Don Bell, he is in stable condition.

Sheriff Bell said on Wednesday afteroon that Deputy Nathan White is expected to soon be released from Harobview Medical Center.
