Snow piling up in Western Montana mountains

MISSOULA – A winter storm that hit parts of Western Montana overnight has dumped some pretty impressive snow totals in the high country.

The National Weather Service was reporting on Wednesday morning that 23″ of snow had fallen at the Lookout Pass Ski Area in the past 24 hours while 14″ of snow was reported at Lolo Pass.

Lesser amounts of snow were being reported in Northwest Montana with the NWS reporting that 5.5″ of snow had fallen at Blacktail Mountain near Lakeside while 4″ of snow has fallen near Marion and 3.5″ of snow was reported at the Izzak Walton Inn in Essex.  Whitefish Mountain Resort saw 3″ of snow with 7″ reported at the summit of the ski area.

Freezing rain was being reported on Interstate 90 in the Superior area as well as along Montana Highway 200 between Bonner and Greenough causing slick travel conditions.

Winds also have been hitting the area with a gust of 49 mph reported near Racetrack in Powell County as well as near the airport in Grangeville, Idaho.
