Marina police say goodbye to retired K-9 Sammy

    Marina, CA (KSBW) — The Marina Police Department announce that retired police K-9 Sammy died on Wednesday.

According to officials, Sammy, who was a Belgian Malinois, lived to the be 13.5 years old. He died surrounded by his partner and owner Sgt. Steve Russo and Justine McMahon.

Sammy was trained in apprehension, defense, tracking suspects, narcotics, and SWAT operations. For seven years Sammy was involved in numerous successful criminal apprehensions, narcotics searches, and partnership with Sgt. Steve Russo

Sammy retired in October of 2014.

“The Marina Police Department mourns the loss of our Retired K-9 Sammy and thanks him and Sgt. Steve Russo for his many years of dedicated service to the City of Marina and surrounding communities,” read the news release.
