Grant Hill didn’t mince words when asked what he thought about President Donald Trump’s recent attacks on Baltimore.
“Unconscionable,” the co-owner of the Atlanta Hawks and former NBA star told CNN’s Van Jones Sunday evening at the “Citizen by CNN” event in Detroit.
“It’s unconscionable to think that, you know the President of the United States would, you know, say that about a segment of the population,” said Hill, whose father grew up in Baltimore. “I have great memories and fond memories of my time in Baltimore and my grandparents and spending summers there.”
Hill’s roots to the city were on full display as he said Trump’s words “hurt” him. When Hill’s father was traded to play for the Washington Redskins, he grew up in the suburbs of Virginia, close to Washington, DC.
“Obviously, Baltimore has gone through some challenges and some struggles like most cities have in recent years but you know, the people there are good people,” Hill told Jones.
Trump on Saturday suggested conditions in Rep. Elijah Cummings’ district, which is majority black and includes parts of Baltimore, are “FAR WORSE and more dangerous” than those at the US-Mexico border. He continued his attacks into Sunday, tweeting that “Elijah Cummings has failed badly!” also taking aim at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s San Francisco district. Pelosi previously condemned Trump’s tweets on Cummings as racist attacks.
