LOLO – Traveler’s Rest State Park smelled like popcorn this weekend as they hosted their annual Lewis and Clark Film Festival which celebrated the time that Lewis and Clark spent in the Bitterroot in 1805.

The explorers laid camp at Travelers Rest in present-day Lolo on September 9th — 213 years ago on Sunday. The films shown included reenactments, documentaries and campfire discussions about Lewis and Clark’s experiences in Western Montana and Idaho.

“We tried to focus on films that addressed their experience here. So it’s worked out pretty well. We’ve found that a lot of participants in the films were local people — reenactors who tried their hand at acting and did a pretty good job,” said Vernon Carroll who works as a ranger at the park.

“Some of our Native American participants were tribal members from the Flathead Tribe as well as the Blackfeet Tribe, Shoshone Tribe and the Nez Perce Tribe. So people see faces that they recognize — if they’re familiar with Lewis and Clark story here at Travelers Rest,” Carroll added.

The annual event was free and open to the public.
