MISSOULA – This week’s One Class at a Time grant winner is Big Sky High School math teacher Michelle Ellen.

Ellen, who works with students from 9th through 12th grade, says her students love to be hands-on when it comes to learning.  Right now, most of the information comes from problems on a sheet of paper or the white board.

Ellen says that math is an abstract concept that can be difficult to translate into the real world without math manipulatives which her classroom is lacking.

She was happy to learn that she has been selected to receive a 250-dollar grant thanks to KPAX-TV and Republic Services.  Republic Services Municipal Manager Chad Bauer and KPAX-TV Bob Hermes presented the check to Ellen,

“Having things that they can use, and do with their hands, and having objects they can say this is an activity that I can use objects that I can show in the real world and have meaning," Ellen said.
