MISSOULA – The University of Montana is tapping an educator with extensive research and teaching experience to fill the important position of Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Beverly Edmond had been filling the Provost post on an "interim" basis while the school administration was reorganizing, but announced a short while ago she would be leaving for certain at the end of March.

UM President Seth Bodnar has announced that Dr. Jon Harbor will be coming on board as the top pick from a nationwide search. Harbor has been working at Purdue University as a vice provost and also director of digital education. He’s also a professor of Planetary Sciences.

It’s expected Harbor will play a key role in Bodnar’s initiative to reposition UM with more emphasis on science and research as part of an overall education at the University of Montana.

Harbor will start his new job Aug. 1. Law School Dean Paul Kirgis will serve as Acting Provost until then.
