MISSOULA – As most Missoulians were preparing for spring the snow decided to make another appearance.
That’s prompting some people to wonder when is the right time to take your snow tires off? To answer this question we spoke with Montana Highway Patrol.
MHP Sargent David Baggs says leaving your studded tires on longer than they are needed reduces traction making it harder to stop and easier to lose control of your vehicle, adding that it’s like “driving on ice skates.”
Studded tires are legal in Montana from October 1 until May 31. If you leave your tires on past May 31, there’s a chance you could be fined. Baggs said the likelihood of that is especially high if you are involved in a crash.
