The deadline for filing state, and federal, income-tax returns is usually April 15 – but the combination of a weekend and a holiday this year have pushed it to Tuesday, April 17.
With April 15 falling on Sunday this year, the deadline usually would be moved to Monday, the next day.
But a Washington, D.C., holiday – Emancipation Day – on Monday has pushed the deadline to midnight on Tuesday.
Montana will follow the federal guideline and move its deadline for state income-tax returns to Tuesday as well, said state Revenue Director Mike Kadas.
Returns post-marked by midnight Tuesday will be considered on time – but, as Kadas noted, the vast majority of Montana filers do so electronically, rather than through the mail.
“Eighty-five percent of tax returns are filed electronically now,” he told MTN News. “So, as long as the time on that electronic filing is before midnight of April 17, you’re good.”
About a half-million Montana households file state income-tax returns. Kadas said there’s usually a rush of returns filed in early February, for those seeking a quick refund on their taxes, and then the last-minute wave this past week.
