BILLINGS – Farmers across Montana are struggling to start planting their fields because of wet conditions.
Callie Cooley of the Montana State University Extension Agriculture division said farmers are delayed but see a window this weekend after sunny skies and warm temperatures.
And when they do start, they will likely be planting in moist soil, she said. With the delays, Cooley does not believe that the window of opportunity for a good growing season has passed.
"Probably not panic time yet, I guess. If we look down the line, we see the delayed plantings. You can always run the risk of decreased yields and things like that. But at this point, we’ll have to wait and see how things pan out, and hopefully we’ll get some work done this weekend and into next weekend and further on this spring," Pregizer said.
