HELENA – It will likely be a long time before people forget the 2017 fire season in Montana and with the warm weather on the way, a new fire season is ahead.
While rain and snow are currently watering vegetation, the outlook for 2018 calls for an above-average potential fire season during July and August. With that in mind, now is the time for homeowners to evaluate their home and create a 30-to-50 foot buffer of vegetation that’s green, low, and well watered.
Reese Martin is Lewis and Clark County’s new Disaster and Emergency Services coordinator and he said to cut the grass low and keep the bushes and tree limbs trimmed.
“All in an effort to keep the fire out of your trees, out of the area that’s going to quickly move across and ignite your home," he said. "It creates a situation where they could possibly put it out before it gets your home and that’s what’s important, protecting your home.”
