HELENA – Although spring allergies can start at different times, they generally begin with the arrival of warmer weather.

Warm weather brings more than just blooming plants, it can also trigger the growth of mold.

Helena resident Brandon Millions’ allergies usually start at the beginning of spring.

"That’s when my nose starts getting all stuffed up and my allergies suffer right here and my eyes too," he said. "They get really itchy. I always have Visine with me to help with the itchy eyes."

He added that over-the-counter allergy medicine does not necessarily help him. He sticks to home remedies as well like taking hot showers to clear his sinuses.

"It gets really bad mid-summer because that’s when all the pollen is out and it hits ninety degrees," Millons said.

Fellow Helena resident Misty Ellis said she has similar allergy issues.

"Usually get a bad stuffy nose and itchy eyes," Ellis said. "Usually use like a washrag to kind of calm my eyes down and a nose spray to calm my nose down but that doesn’t really work."

The American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology suggests people start with an over-the-counter antihistamine. If that doesn’t help, they should contact their doctor.

An allergist can help identify what causes the itchy, running, burning nose and eyes.

Robert Zimmerman, another Helena resident, said his allergies are usually bad around May.

"Mowing lawns or doing any type of lawn work outside for more than a couple of hours at a time, you usually get a stuffy nose or some symptoms," Zimmerman said.

He said he self-remedies with hot tea.

"I just kind of tough it out for the most part," Zimmerman said. "Just kind of got to get used to it."

It is recommended that someone with allergies change their clothes after being outside.

If possible, keep your windows and doors shut at home and in your car during allergy season as well.
