MISSOULA – Missoula will be a little quieter this month, with the Special Olympics Montana Summer Games moving on to Great Falls.

But Special Olympics athletes are still showing their enthusiasm and effort in the regional competition.

The Five Valleys Spring Games kicked off at Big Sky High School this morning, with athletes from all over West Central Montana returning to Missoula for their annual competition in track and field events.

The past three years, the athletes were getting to parade twice, for these games and the statewide games in mid-May. But with Missoula’s turn past for the Montana competition, the focus is back on the local schools. And the athletes were showing as much enthusiasm as ever.

This year, local law enforcement and educators were joined by “Flash” of Bikers Against Bullies USA, and a moving rendition of a tribal “honor song” to pay tribute to the athletes’ commitment.

The Five Valleys Spring Games will continue through Friday morning at Big Sky High School , with swimming at the YMCA. The general public is always welcome to come and cheer.
