MISSOULA – The smoke that’s filling the sky above Mount Sentinel is coming from a planned burn.

City officials say that many residents have reported seeing smoke on the southwest face of Mount Sentinel over the last few days.

The fire is a controlled burn which is part of a forest restoration thinning project on City-owned open space.

City contractors have a valid Burning Permit from Missoula County and are attending to the fire.

The Missoula Fire Department and 911 Emergency Services are aware of the project.

The thinning project is funded by a grant from the Montana Department of Natural Resources.
