MISSOULA – Faculty met at the University of Montana on Thursday to discuss the latest proposal in response to the president’s plan to cut up to $10 million in spending.
The Faculty Senate passed a proposal Thursday that will be sent to the president’s office for another round of feedback on the spending changes. It emphasizes their concern for maintaining enough faculty to keep the curriculum for programs intact.
Faculty members say while they’re concerned the plan could cut dozens of full-time equivalent positions, but even more so they are worried about the loss of programs and courses they feel are central to UM’s mission as a Liberal Arts university.
"We are concerned about the loss of faculty jobs, but more, we are concerned about our ability to deliver a quality education to our students. Faculty interests and student interests are the same," UM Faculty Senate Chair Mary-Ann Bowman said.
Faculty members will have the opportunity for further review of changes before another proposal is sent back to the administration.
