MISSOULA – The Missoula Police Department will be increasing patrols near the California Street Footbridge following a spike of reported crime in the area.

Missoula Police spokesman Sgt, Travis Welsh says that it’s not uncommon for crime to increase in the area during this time of the year. Despite social media reports of organized violence police say they have no reports of that in the area.

An increase in foot traffic due to the weather could be the cause of the increase in crime and a variety of other reasons. Sgt. Welsh says criminal activity that has been reported in the area has been mostly inside the transient community.

Missoula Police will have bike cops patrolling the area and also assign a street crimes unit to the area in an effort to combat the increased crime in the area.
