MISSOULA – Missoula Relay for Life celebrated a community birthday party to honor those affected by cancer at the Missoula County Fairgrounds on Saturday. There were games, a bounce house, face painting, and free food — all of which was made possible by various sponsors.

Relay for Life volunteer Matt Loomis told MTN News that events like these are crucial to the fight against this disease.

"The odds of somebody you know — somebody you love — getting it is high, unfortunately. It’s going to touch people that we know, people that we love, but because of the work that Relay For Life and the American Cancer Society has done the odds of surviving, the odds of beating it, have gotten so much greater," Loomis said.

"And it’s because of events like this and it’s because we talk about early detection and we celebrate the people around us that are still around. That’s why we have better odds," he added.

The money raised from this event was set to be donated to the American Cancer Society.
