STEVENSVILLE – Managers with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks believe they’ve come up with a plan to resolve the long-standing problems with the Stevensville river access on the Bitterroot, but accepting a donation of land and making the location a full fishing access site.

Use of the site at the bridge north of Stevensville reached the boiling point last summer, when the landowner had finally had enough with illegal parties, trash and parking, closing the entire location. But last fall, a new landowner purchased the Fort Owen Ranch, and she’s offering to donate seven acres to FWP to make a formal fishing access site.

Plans call for continuing to use the current boat launch into the Bitterroot, and adding organized parking, primitive camping, latrine toilets and the usual features found at an FWP site.

Now, FWP is taking public comments on the plan, with the goal of trying to build some of the features this fall.
