EAST MISSOULA – A dog died in a Thursday night fire in East Missoula but firefighters were able to quickly put out a blaze at a home in East Missoula after a fire sparked in a bedroom.

The East Missoula Fire Department and the Missoula Rural Fire Department were dispatched for reports of heavy black smoke coming from a home on Speedway Avenue around 6 p.m. on Thursday.

Crews were on scene within minutes. East Missoula Fire Chief Justin Shaffer says they had the fire under control shortly after arrival.

"Our fire crew arrived. They confirmed the heavy black smoke, made entry, and found some heavy fire in a bedroom. They got a
quick knockdown, confirmed that no one was home. There was one dog inside that didn’t make it out," said Shaffer.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
