BUTTE  Fire officials in Butte are calling a fire that destroyed a vacant home on Dakota Street suspicious.

Firefighters responded a house on South Dakota Street to find it fully engulfed in flames a few minutes after midnight on Thursday.

Crews took a defensive position to stop the fire from spreading and the structure eventually collapsed.

The home had been vacant for a long time, but squatters may have been staying in the home.

"There were no utilities, there was no one living there, supposed to be living there, so it’s obviously suspicious, it’s most likely an arson fire," said Butte Fire Chief Jeff Miller.

Crews responded to a smaller fire at the same residence back in February that was likely started by someone squatting in the home.
