Wildfire near Hot Springs grows to nearly 200 acres

RONAN – The Garden Creek fire which is continuing to burn north of Hot Springs grew dramatically on Thursday.

The blaze has now scorched an estimated 200 acres up from Thursday’s estimate of 10-to-20 acres.

The lightning-sparked fire is two miles north of Hot Springs and is burning in steep and rocky terrain.

Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribal fire officials are using helicopter bucket drops and fire retardant to slow the fire’s spread.

No structures are threatened.

The following roads are closed until further notice near the Garden Creek fire:

  • HS-4000 road
  • HS-5000 road
  • HS-1000 road at the HS-5030 junction to the north of the fire
  • HS-1000 road at the McGinnis road junction to the south of the fire.
